Students worked together to compose a letter (below) that was handed out in the community. My students also brainstormed a list of community agencies to contact for donations, including the Lake Sun who featured our class on the front page of the paper. Some students were so inspired they went door-to-door with their parents explaining our cause and why we did it. Overall, students collected enough supplies to fill 75 birthday bags to donate to the local homeless shelter.

Dear Community,

Have you ever wondered what your birthday would be like without a birthday cake and candles? We're to make sure that doesn't happen. We are a class of 4th grade students at Hawthorn Elementenary in the Camdenton R3 school district. We are collecting items to create Birthday Bags for families at the Helping Hands Homeless Shelter. These bags will let families make their birthdays a memorable one. Birthday Bags will include everything to bake a cake, frosting, sprinkles and birthday candles.

We are looking for donations to make these bags. We will need the following items:

  • Cake Mix

  • Birthday Candles

  • Sprinkles

  • Frosting

  • "Happy Birthday" Gift Bags

If it is easier, you can make a monetray donation and we will do the shopping for you!

We need your help! Operation B-Day wouldn't be complete without your donation. You can drop donations off at Hawthorn Elementary school until December 6th. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact our teacher, Miss Strunk, at mstrunk@camdentonschools.org or (573)317-3450.

Thanks for your help!
