COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES

Students benefit from and enjoy Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures in our classroom.

Using strategies such as Numbered Heads Together, Round Robin, Rally Coach, Think-Pair-Share, Showdown and other strategies I can ensure that all students are engaged in the lesson.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

Preparing Students for an Ever-Changing World with Relevance & Rigor

REAL WORLD APPLICATION

Making connections between our learning standards and the world around us is important for students to understand.

During our Area & Perimeter unit students worked together to find the area of the word "Hawthorn" in our main entry way. Students also worked together to design a home with a given area and perimeter.

GUIDED READING

In our classroom I use formal assessments, such as the Scholastic Reading Inventory and the DRA, and informal assessments to create guided reading groups based on students' needs. Having a common reading time with the teachers on my team enables students to "flex" to other classrooms to participate in a group that most closely addresses his or her needs.

In guided reading groups I use a leveled text to reinforce skills taught in our whole group reading lesson.

GUIDED MATH

Throughout a math unit students will have the opportunity to participate in guided math groups. After introducing and teaching the foundation of the content, students will then break into small groups based on needs.

During guided math groups students will participate in 3 stations: an independent practice, a learning game and then a guided group. This structure helps to break up the instructional time while getting students engaged in several different ways.

Guided math groups allow me to provide interventions while teaching the content.
